Georgia School Counselor of the Year works with ADD-ADHD Students
Beatrice Allen, who works with and counsels children with ADD-ADHD at Rigdon Road Elementary School in Columbus, Georgian, was named the state’s 2004-05 Elementary School Counselor of the Year.
An article in the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer profiles Allen and her “best friends” class, which is populated with ADD-ADHD children. Her half-hour course seems to be producing results for children with attention deficit problems.
The profile includes insight from Allen, who says “Children are in such a fast-acting world now, with Nintendo and all that"... "I know it's part of progress, but sometimes it also steals their imaginations, and the ones with ADD/ADHD tell me they often feel like something is crawling inside them. So I want them to go back to the still life while they're in here, where they do things themselves, instead of a computer."
The article discusses Allen’s classroom, her approach toward ADD/ADHD and the impact her efforts have had on parents and other educators.
